Updates from the Writing Cave: April Adventures!

Hey everyone, I hope you had a good month πŸ™‚

I spent half of April stressing out, and the other half relaxing, adjusting to my partner’s new work schedule, and getting back into a regular habit of cycling now the weather’s better. I didn’t get as much writing done as I’d hoped, not on original projects, but I think I forced myself back into it too soon.

Anyway, here’s what happened in the Writing Cave last month!

April Writing Cave Updates

Blogging:

I wrote two blog posts in April, an updates post, and a TV review post of Stranger Things and Fate: The Winx Saga. This month I’ll write a Book Review post of The Lost Prince and Lost Isle, which I’m pretty excited about!

Two posts a month works great for me. I know lots of blogging advice says daily posts are the way to go, but I can’t produce quality content that often, and being social (aka replying to comments) daily as an introvert will never happen! I’ll do what’s best for me and hope it works out πŸ™‚

Art:

I haven’t drawn much recently, but as a kid I was quite the artist and drew at least once a week. Anyway, I thought I’d put some of those old sketches out there:

Sketch of the Red Eyes Black Dragon and the Blue Eyes White Dragon from Yugioh
Some old Yu-Gi-Oh fanart, drawn a million years ago when I was 16. I loved Seto and Joey, and their dragons!

In future I might share some more recent sketches, and I’d like to draw something in May!

Writing:

On the 14th of April I realised aiming for a large word count wasn’t motivating me at all, so I quit Camp Nanowrimo. I ended up at 3600 words, no where near as many as I wanted to write, but I think I’ve started in the wrong place and need to start over from a different point of view anyway.

After quitting Nano I planned a bit more for Merlin: Second Chance and worked on some old Psych and Yu-Gi-Oh fanfiction. Writing isn’t coming easy right now, and I don’t want to force it, so I’m writing the projects that call to me most, even fanfiction. I figure it’ll ease me back into writing again after two years studying an MA that, more often than not, made me hate writing.

No goals for May: if I write, I write, if I don’t, I don’t. I’m using the time instead to catch up on things I fell behind on during my degree: regular exercise, cleaning, a huge list of household chores, a mile long to-do list, and other hobbies like gaming and drawing.

Merlin:

Merlin’s latest trick, after cuddles on my lap, is to jump on top of my PC and press the power button, turning the PC off and making me lose what’s left of my sanity as I try to remember what I was doing and which documents I had open before he did it!

He refuses to eat anything apart from this cheap canned cat tuna from the bargain store where my partner works. They sold out recently, but luckily we could order it directly from the manufacturer: I swear he’s about as fussy as I am with eating!

Social Media:

Last month I said I’d be more active on social media. I kind of have, in that I’ve shared more stuff more often, but it’s hard to know what to do with Twitter. I’m the type of person who speaks when I’m spoken to, but doesn’t really reach out or talk to others unless I have a question to ask or something to say. I’m also terrible at small talk, so maybe I’ll focus less on social media and more on blogging!

Board Games/Video Games:

A work colleague lent my partner her copy of Disney Villainous, which I thought would be super gimmicky, but it’s really hard and involves lots of strategy. As a result I’m terrible at it. We got the Marvel Villainous version for ourselves and I got destroyed by Thanos.

I’m also playing Hearthstone again, and some Dead by Daylight, but not as much as before. I think maybe I was playing it everyday to escape from reality and the pandemic: Not a great strategy, so I’m focusing more on board games and learning to be ‘social’ again, as I think I’ve forgotten how!

Books & TV:

I’m going to watch The Irregulars, since it’s based on Sherlock Holmes and I like anything Sherlock related. I’m also thinking of finally activating my Kindle Unlimited trial, although the one book I really want to read, Winter’s Orbit, isn’t on it. Back to Swagbucks to earn some Amazon vouchers I think!

Obligatory Pandemic Related Stuff, The Beach & Sweets:

Our ‘non-essential’ shops reopened on April 12th, so after months of not having anything but flip-flops I could get shoes. Things were crazy those first few days though: Shops were super busy and some people were queuing from 3am to get into clothes shops. Madness. Oh, and the streets outside pubs are crazy busy as they’re only allowed to serve customers sitting outside!

I still only go shopping if I need to, but I’ve started going for bike rides again. I’m keeping as much distance as possible from other people, and I forgot how nice the beach is:

I was also inspired by C Kennedy’s post to get some favourite childhood sweets. Unfortunately I found out I can’t eat Chupa Chups anymore as they apparently contain milk protein! A warning to those with lactose intolerance: Milk is found in the most unexpected places, even favourite childhood lollipops!

Thanks for Reading!

How was your April? What books/TV shows would you recommend? What’s your favourite anime? Do you play board games? Chat in the comments!

What’s your favourite anime?

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, even though it broke my heart. The characters are awesome and it’s also really funny in places, despite having sad moments too. Ed and Roy are probably my favourites πŸ™‚

  1. That’s so funny about Merlin. Our cats will eat ANYthing, even stuff they shouldn’t, the silly felines. I’m not a Twitter fanatic, either. In fact, I deleted my account since I hadn’t been using it. I enjoyed The Irregulars, happy viewing!

    • Merlin is the weirdest cat, the only thing he eats that he’s not supposed to is the filament for the 3D printer, which he adores for some reason! I’m wondering which social media platforms are worth keeping as I’m slowly learning I can’t do them all. Thanks for stopping by πŸ™‚

  2. Hi Louise! Wow blogging advice recommends daily posts? That is really hard and stressful. I’m glad you’re taking it easy and doing what works best for you. Self-care is important (I learned that the hard way).
Your art is WONDERFUL! I love the Blue eyes white and red eyes black dragons! Awesome job! Are they your favorite Yu-Gi-Oh monsters?
You have a great approach to writing too. Pushing oneself leads to stress, so I’m glad you’re taking it easy and catching up – and it looks like you have a lot of fun activities planned. I support you.
Aw does Merlin let you have some time by yourself too? Or does he always want to be around? I know a friend who’s had to keep her cats at times in another room due to them interrupting her writing.

    Have a fun month πŸ™‚
Also, question since you mentioned sweets – have you tried Turkish Delights before? If so, did you like them? I’m tempted to have them after an antagonist had them on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier lol.

    • Yeah most social media/blogging advice would burn me out. Sorry you had to learn self-care is important the hard way 😦

Thanks πŸ˜€ Red Eyes is my absolute favourite because Joey is my favourite character, and I ship him with Seto, hence the Blue Eyes πŸ™‚

Yeah, my plan is to try and rediscover my inner writer, by focusing on my favourite things. I’m hoping they’ll inspire me to write again πŸ™‚

Merlin is very good at vanishing for hours. I used to shut him out of my writing room when he was a kitten, as he was a pain, but now he’s older he often just stares out of the window or sleeps under a pile of blankets when I’m writing πŸ™‚

Hope you have a fun month too! I’ve tried Turkish Delights: They look so tasty but I found them a bit flavourless. I much prefer my sweets to be super sweet πŸ™‚

      • Yeah I’m not sure how people are able to blog daily w/o burning out. Aw yeah, I often work for long periods of time and am hard on myself, so that makes it tough. I hope you’re taking lots of time for self-care this month and beyond πŸ™‚

Aw πŸ™‚ that’s cool πŸ™‚ It seems like Joey and Seto often don’t get along lol, especially with how Seto kind of looks down on him (but also secretly respects him lol). Have you written a fanfic that ships them? πŸ™‚

I’m sure you’ll be inspired to write again. I support you πŸ™‚

Aww lol that’s cool. Does he like to stare at animals outside?

πŸ™‚ That’s interesting. I wonder why they are flavorless. But yes, super sweet sweets are good :).

        • Take it easy where you can πŸ™‚ I’m thinking I might take June and even July as a break too, keep up with the blog and maybe social media but leave everything else. I need to focus on learning to enjoy writing again, however long it takes πŸ™‚

Yeah, I think Seto and Joey have real chemistry lol. I’ve written fanfic for them, or rather scenes from a story, but never posted anything.

Merlin loves staring at cats, birds and even the binmen xD

          • I’ll try my best. As someone who has pushed themself for much of their life, it’s been hard to take it easy. What do you like to do most to relax? πŸ™‚ I like your plan to just keep up with blog and social media, but take it easy on other things. Are fanfics helping you with enjoying writing?

lol good point- beneath the hostility, there is much respect for Joey from Kaiba. Do Joey and Kaiba tease each other in your fanfic?

Haha that’s cool. Have the binmen ever waved at Merlin? πŸ™‚ XD.

            • I know the feeling, I’m like the Queen of pushing myself hard, and no matter how well I do there’s always this part of my mind that tells me I could have done better, you know? I think watching TV and going to sit by the beach are my favourite things to do to relax. If there are any distractions at all I’m terrible at switching off though.

My Joey and Kaiba start off as antagonistic but gradually learn to tolerate then like each other. All my romances are like that though, slow-burn, even if they don’t start as enemies. I prefer it that way πŸ™‚ I think writing fanfic has helped me enjoy writing fanfic, but it hasn’t motivated me to work on my original stuff yet. Hopefully it will eventually, but I think it’ll take a while to undo the damage done during my MA.

The binmen are usually too busy looking through bins in case people chucked away good stuff to notice Merlin xD

              Liked by 1 person

              • Aww I know how that is. I push myself hard and I worry about not doing good enough. And, my mind can be nitpicky. Have you been able to find some ways to push yourself less? It’s been tough for me. You have some awesome relaxation strategies. But yeah, I know what you mean about distractions. The phone can be distracting, yes?

πŸ™‚ I think it’s better that way with a slow-burn because you can develop relationships even more that way, no? πŸ™‚ Does Kaiba tease Joey in a kind, light-hearted way in your story after they like each other? πŸ™‚ I remember you told me that the MA was super stressful, so it’s understandable how it’s been tough to get motivation back. One step at a time. You can do it. I support you.

lol are they allowed to search through people’s garbage? Or do they do it in spite of rules not allowing that? lol.

                • Sorry you also push yourself hard 😦 I should probably look up techniques to try and stop. I’m terrible at not doing it though, because I’m a perfectionist. Phones are a nightmare, even with all my social media and emails disconnected from it, I still find a way to get distracted xD

Same, I can’t stand relationships that are based just on physical attraction or superficial things. I like deep emotional connection πŸ™‚ Yeah, Kaiba’s a sweetie deep down, and a playful tease! Thanks πŸ™‚ The last thing I expected my MA to do was ruin writing for me! Getting back into writing seems to be a slow process, and unfortunately I’m an impatient person. But hopefully the motivation will return eventually πŸ™‚

I’m not sure if they’re allowed to, but I guess because people threw that stuff away and don’t want it, it’s fair to take xD

                  • Thanks, my friend. I push myself on a lot of things, even things I enjoy. For example, I sometimes set monthly goals for how many drawings I should make each month (and that can stress me out, especially since, when I reach the goal, I end up pushing myself for an even higher goal – i.e. going from 30 to 40 drawings in one month). And I can beat myself up when I mess up on a drawing. So I can relate. Has taking breaks helped you with this? And lol I can relate to what you mean about the phone. I don’t have any social media apps, but I can still get distracted by news by going to a news website.

Same here. I too can’t stand shallow connections based on superficial things. Deep emotional connection between characters can bring about beautiful stories, yes? πŸ™‚ Aww does Kaiba get along with Yugi in your story too? Aw I can relate, I too am impatient. But I’m sure your motivation will return. One step at a time. You got this. I believe in you and support you.

                    lol xD.

                    • I set too high goals too, and when it doesn’t look like I’m going to meet them it’s demoralising and I tend to give up. I’m trying not setting any goals at all for writing, to see how that goes. 40 drawings a month is huge, I can barely do one. How do you even manage drawing 30? Taking a break is helping a lot. I’m slowly beginning to think about my stories, not because I feel I have to, but because I want to πŸ™‚ I’ve recently made a rule where I’m only allowed to check the news once a day, for no more than 30 minutes. It’s helping a bit, although I think I’m adding a ‘check it at night’ rule, as if I go on news sites at the start of the day it can ruin my mood.

Exactly, emotional connection is so important in stories πŸ™‚ I think Kaiba and Yugi eventually reach an understanding, and a respect of sorts. Thanks, hopefully I’ll be happy with writing again soon πŸ™‚

  3. Yeah, I know what you mean. I am pretty hard on myself when I don’t meet goals. Not setting goals might help. Has setting small goals helped before? As for drawings, I’m not sure. I think I just spend much of the day drawing on weekends and I guess I just use similar headshapes and eye shapes (or just use real references) and draw but I don’t capture that many specific details. I know that might sound confusing, but I guess that, by not capturing so many small details and getting used to my style, I’m able to usually finish a drawing in about 45-60 minutes and I try to draw daily (and if I can’t think of an idea, I’ll just draw something simpler like a pencil lol). But I need to push myself less with drawing and other tasks. Do you mostly draw when the inspiration hits? I think it’s great how you are thinking about your stories because you want to πŸ™‚ I bet your writing motivation is gradually coming back! πŸ™‚ Which story are you thinking about? Your news reading rule sounds good. I need to do the same – to have a cut-off and stick to it. Do you use an alarm for your news reading limit?

Definitely. And emotional connection makes it more likely that a reader would cheer for a couple, no? I’m sure you’ll be happy with writing soon :).

    • Setting small goals just makes me more miserable if I fail to meet them, because at the moment sometimes I struggle to do anything at all. Maybe after the pandemic I might be able to set goals again?

That’s so cool, I wish I had your dedication πŸ™‚ Do you watch TV whilst drawing or focus fully on drawing? It takes me 3 hours to draw one thing, and most of the reason I don’t draw much at the moment is I don’t know what to draw! Yeah I only draw when inspiration strikes, which isn’t often.

Thanks, hopefully it is, I was thinking about my Merlin story πŸ™‚ At the moment with the news I’m just trying to stay aware of the time, which is working okay.

      Liked by 1 person

      • That’s understandable. Yeah I think it would be a good idea to wait until after the pandemic to start setting goals. All the best, Louise πŸ™‚

I tend to watch YouTube or some other show or listen to a podcast while drawing – mainly because I try to get too much done in a day so I multitask sometimes lol. Do you like to multitask while drawing? (For me it works out overall, but sometimes I have to rewind to catch details in a show or clip lol). What are you usually inspired to draw?

πŸ™‚ That’s cool. You got this.
Good idea. What’s the best way to stay aware of time? Sometimes I lose track of it while I’m working on projects.

        Liked by 1 person

        • Cool πŸ™‚ I multitask a lot too, mostly because I’m easily distracted! I usually put on a show I’ve seen tons of times before when I’m drawing, so if I miss a bit it doesn’t matter so much. Usually I’m inspired to draw my characters πŸ™‚

If glancing at the clock every so often doesn’t work, setting alarms is the best way to keep track of time πŸ™‚

          Liked by 1 person

          • That’s cool πŸ™‚ Do you mostly put on anime shows? That’s awesome that you usually draw your own characters. You’ve drawn Merlin and Arthur, correct?

πŸ™‚ Awesome. I need to try the alarms then. :). It can be hard to stick to time limits.

            Liked by 1 person

            • Nah I usually put on Psych or Merlin as it’s good background noise and the episodes are more self contained πŸ™‚ Yeah I’ve drawn Merlin and Arthur twice. I want to draw Ryou Bakura next I think! (Him and the ring spirit are probably my favourite Yu-Gi-Oh characters!)

              Liked by 1 person

              • That’s awesome. Does Merlin watch shows (including the show Merlin) with you? πŸ™‚

                  • Cool πŸ™‚ Does he react though when he sees a cat on TV (like if he passes by the TV and sees a cat on there lol)? πŸ™‚

I’d like to hear more about your thoughts on the spirit :). I was wondering what indicated to you that the spirit was misunderstood and not evil? I don’t remember much about Season 6, so I’d love to hear your thoughts. Ryou is sweet and caring. A great character and a good friend :).

                    Liked by 1 person

                    • Nope, he doesn’t even react to cats that meow on TV, but he does watch the neighbour’s cats out the window πŸ™‚

I’m basing most of it off the first two seasons, as I never got past battle city, but I know pretty much all the spoilers for later seasons: I stopped watching because I found out the end and didn’t want Atem to leave πŸ˜› I believe the spirit protected Ryou in battle city in the battle against Atem by switching back control. With the past the spirit had, is it any wonder he’s the way he is? He just wanted revenge for Kul Elna. Plus my theory is Zorc is the real bad guy who preyed on the spirit’s despair and used him for his own ends, then so many years trapped together in the ring drove the spirit insane. Hence I don’t think the spirit is purely evil, he’s just a tragic victim of circumstance who never got to reach his full potential. I could be confusing fanfic with canon again though, I do that sometimes πŸ™‚

  4. Haha that’s cool. Do the other cats try to talk with him through the window?

Have you thought about watching the filler season after Battle City? I recall that in the filler season, they had Kaiba hosting another tournament in which the winner would go against Yugi (and one of Kaiba’s rivals joined the tournament). You make an excellent point. I forgot about how Zorc was behind much of the chaos. It’s been a while since I’ve watched the show, but that makes total sense. I agree, the spirit is a victim of circumstance.

    • One cat comes right up to the glass and makes weird hissing noises, which Merlin hates. The others just stare back πŸ˜›

I always intended to watch the rest of Yu-Gi-Oh one day, but I want to watch it subbed as they cut so much out of the English dub and I have to be in the mood to read the subtitles. Which version have you seen? Yeah I feel a lot of sympathy for the spirit of the ring, it’s why I’ve been working on a fanfic about him, and one of my original stories is based on him too πŸ™‚

      Liked by 1 person

      • Does Merlin hiss back at the cat that hisses at him? That’s funny that others stare back. It’d be hilarious if one of them got in a staring contest and they both try not to blink LOL.

Good point. They make a lot of edits to the dubbed version and parts of the edits look silly, like using finger guns instead of showing the pistols in the show. I’ve only seen the dubbed. Did you watched the subbed on Crunchy Roll or a different site? (I saw it on TV when they were still showing it here; sadly, they got rid of all cartoons from the network that I was watching it on). That’s great! Do you plan to post the fanfic too? πŸ™‚ I bet it’s an awesome story and am sure your original story is wonderful too! :).

        Liked by 1 person

        • Nah Merlin’s pretty chill! Cats rarely blink anyway, and usually when they do it’s a slow blink that apparently means they’re smiling πŸ™‚

Yeah the subbed is way better. It’s so long ago since I last watched I can’t remember where I watched. I think it was Crunchyroll? They rarely show anime on TV anymore here either. I might post my fanfic eventually, but I refuse to post any unless I’ve completely finished it already, so I don’t leave anymore unfinished fics out there πŸ˜› Thanks πŸ™‚ I’m never short of ideas but finishing things is hard!

          Liked by 1 person

          • Merlin is a great cat! πŸ™‚ I didn’t know that slow blink means they’re smiling. That’s cool. Does Merlin give you a lot of slow blinks?

I agree, subbed is better for anime. Is there a network dedicated to cartoons in the UK? There is in the U.S. but yeah, most networks here do not show cartoons. That makes sense- I’ve seen unfinished fanfics and wish I could see the ending. Finishing things is tough. You can do it πŸ™‚ :D.

I think the only channels dedicated to cartoons in the UK are on subscription services 😦 We don’t even have the freeview TV services anymore though, as the BBC make you pay a license of Β£165 a year just to watch live TV! Yeah, one of the fanfic I adore was last updated 5 years ago! The other one I love is updated maybe every year? xD It’s so good though! What was the fanfic about – the one that you updated 5 years ago? πŸ™‚ That’s cool. I’m sure you’re going to do wonderful w/the fanfics, Louise πŸ™‚ :). Go Louise!

Yeah BBC TV license is quite controversial. I think a lot of younger people boycott it now, as you don’t need it to watch Netflix or Youtube!

It was someone else’s fanfic that updated 5 years ago, about the spirit of the ring coming back and getting a second shot at life. It was so good, but the author never finished it. Thanks πŸ™‚ I have another new story idea too, which is in the early stages, and I’m getting to the point where I think I want to work on something but there are three ideas calling to me at once πŸ˜›

Yeah that is concerning how they price it that high. I can see why people would boycott. Are there cheaper licenses?

Cool. What will your new story be about? πŸ™‚ You got this :).

                    • Unlike a dog, when a cat wags its tail it’s about to pounce xD Also when he runs up to someone with his tail in the air he’s saying hello πŸ™‚

Nah there’s only one place to get a TV license, so there’s no competition for prices. It’s a stupid outddated system really, that needs to be gotten rid of: It was originally introduced to fund the BBC and keep it advert free, but with Netflix and other non live TV services, who make far better TV programmes, it’s just another pointless fee to be avoided!

I really only have a basic idea so far, so I’m not ready to share what it’s about. Probably won’t work on it for a while as I need to focus on Frozen Rose and Merlin πŸ™‚

                      Liked by 1 person

  5. Hehe cats are quite different than dogs in that regard. I imagine a cat owner who didn’t know that tail wagging = about to pounce would be confused. Merlin’s adorable. Do cats also use tails to show unhappiness (or just to say hi and indicate that they’re about to pounce?)

Wow that is quite different than the U.S. – though the U.S. doesn’t have too many companies in the cable market. (And there are lots of adverts). I wonder if the BBC will change its business model to adapt to competition from Netflix, Amazon, and others.

πŸ™‚ You’ll do great with all your stories, Louise :).

Wow, is Britbox mostly focused on just British shows? Yeah, it’s not easy to compete in a market with other big competitors, like HBO, Disney, and Netflix (Amazon, Hulu, etc as well).

I loved the first two seasons of Sherlock, but I disliked Season 3 and Season 4 wasn’t great either. Other than that the only BBC shows I liked were Merlin and Hustle. Merlin was great for the first few seasons then went downhill, but Hustle was consistent across all seasons. Not heard of MI-5 or Cobra though, maybe I’ll look them up πŸ™‚

              • Oh no, well hopefully he isn’t successful in sneaking into the bedroom. Has he snuck into cabinets before? I’ve seen cats do that lol.

Was Season 3 (and season 4) bad due to character deaths or another issue? Yikes, it seems like Merlin took the same path as the Flash in being strong at first but not great later on. MI-5 was shown more in the 2000s, but hope you’re able to find it. I think MI-5 is the American name for it as I think the UK had a different title. Have you seen Peaky Blinders? :).

                • He sneaks into some cabinets, he likes to hide xD

I didn’t like Mary, or the fact the show seemed to tease a Sherlock/John relationship and torpedoed it. For me, shows often fall apart when they add in relationships I don’t like. Yeah Merlin was similar to Flash in that regard, shows seem to do that a lot! I’ve never seen Peaky Blinders, it’s one of the shows I’ve avoided because it’s really popular :P. Is it good?

                  • xD Has he once hidden so well in a cabinet that it was hard to find him?

Yeah, it’s no fun when shows add relationships that are not good. I only started watching Peaky Blinders on Saturday. Saw the first episode. It was good :). Do you avoid popular shows because everyone talks about them and you get tired hearing about it (or for a different reason)?

                    • Nah, I usually see a pair of eyes lurking as he peers out of his hiding spot πŸ˜›

I tend to avoid popular shows because most of the time I hate things the majority of people like. I never understood the appeal of Breaking Bad or Twilight so I gave up watching things a lot of people liked. I think the only exception recently was Stranger Things, but it was Dead by Daylight that convinced me to watch it!

  6. lol Merlin must have fun though hiding like that. Does he like to hide behind chairs too?

That’s totally understandable. I never got into Breaking Bad either. Ditto for Twilight lol. I also got tired of hearing people talking about GoT and hearing about how explicit it can be disinterested me, so yeah, like you, I have avoid many popular things. Let me know if you watch Peaky Blinders sometime :).
