How to Train Your Dragon 3: 3 Hopes for The Hidden World.

HTTYD Hidden World Hopes

The trailer for How to Train Your Dragon 3 was released a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I’d talk about the trailer and how dragons influence my writing.

Ever have an awesome story idea, only to see an awesome film a couple of weeks later that seems so much better than your idea? That was me and How to Train Your Dragon.

I was on a train when I envisioned a boy sitting on a cliff with a dragon. This quickly became ‘Dragonspire.’ I loved the idea, until I saw How to Train Your Dragon and figured I couldn’t top it.

It took me years to convince myself otherwise and continue planning my story. It’s still in development, but I hope one day I’ll finish the story of Arckia and Orik.

Anyway, the trailer for Dragons 3 looks awesome.

The moment the music from the first film played I was filled with sadness, and a feeling the film may not have a happy conclusion. So what do I hope for?

1. More than one other Nightfury.

The Lightfury is cool and all, but lets spare a moment for poor Toothless, stuck with her because she’s the only one of his kind apart from him.

What if they don’t like each other? Would you want to be with the last human on earth even if they weren’t your type?* I think not. (Although Toothless is a dragon, and being a different species he might not really care about that!)

*This gives me the idea for a story, where it’s the end of the world and the last two humans hate each other!

2. Valka to survive.

In Hiccup’s new dragon utopia one familiar face from the second film is missing: His mother, Valka. It’s already been confirmed she’ll appear, but I hope she won’t die. Hiccup’s already lost one parent, and the trend to kill both main characters parents is getting old. Characters can still develop if their parents are alive, and it can add extra conflict to a story!

3. Hiccup and Toothless will stay together.

At the end of the book series the dragons go into hiding, except Toothless and a few others. Hiccup has a kingdom where humans and dragons live in peace, but dragons are rare.

I hope the film concludes this way too. Wishful thinking? Maybe. Hear me out.

In the trailer Hiccup says, ‘We’re no longer safe here. We all have to disappear.’

This sounds like he’s talking about the entire tribe, not just the dragons. My hope is Hiccup and the Vikings of Berk will go into hiding with their dragons.

‘There were dragons when I was a boy. Where they went, only a few know.’

The above lines could be the saddest in the trailer, or the most hopeful. I think after Hiccup and his tribe go into hiding with their dragons, Hiccup will travel with Toothless telling stories of dragons in the hope that one day they’ll be accepted, not hunted.

This is all I can hope for from the ending, because to split up Toothless and Hiccup, best friends, would be the worst ending I could imagine. Part of me still thinks they’ll be split up though. Toothless is an Alpha dragon, and who better to lead the dragons into hiding?

Highlights and Pictures:

Hiccup turning Berk into a dragon utopia. There are dragons everywhere! Gobber doesn’t look too happy about the dragon in his stew:

Toothless falling flat on his face when Hiccup tells him to introduce himself to the Lightfury, and his hilarious attempts at flirting, were great.

The soundtrack, Ed Sheeran’s Castle on the Hill, feels perfect for this trailer.

The bad guy threatening Toothless and trying to invalidate Hiccup. ‘You’re nothing without your dragon.’ Err, my flaming sword and awesome wing suit says otherwise!

The ‘Epic Conclusion,’ text. I’m so not ready… Sometimes I wish the stories I love would never end. I fangirl hard, and endings hurt. There are only a handful of series I’ve finished!

How grown up Hiccup and Astrid are, and how gorgeous her hair looks:

Whew, well that was fun. All this talk of dragons, and my distracted watching of How to Train Your Dragon clips on Youtube, makes me want to binge the entire franchise again before the third film and work on my dragon story. I might even blog about it!

Excited? Terrified? Wondering how you’re going to survive until release day? Me too. How do you think the series will conclude? Chat to me in the comments.

  1. I am so excited for this film!!! I also thought that Astrid’s hair was seriously fantastic in this trailer and it’s wild to see how old they’ve gotten. I’m super excited, though I’m also sad it’s the last one of the series. I could watch endless movies with Hiccup and Toothless!

  2. I really like how the characters age and grow in this series; that’s actually really unique in children’s TV. I know that I’m going to leave the theatre crying, and after reading their AMA post, I’m pretty sure Hiccup and Toothless will go their separate ways. But it will have a hopeful ending with a bright future, I think.

    • Me too, we’ve seen Hiccup grow from awkward kid to leader, and the mini Netflix series just adds more to it 🙂 You won’t be the only one leaving the theatre crying. The second film was bad enough, and the writers seem to like to make us sad so as much as I want them to stay together Hiccup and Toothless will probably split up.
